Whoa…since I posted yesterday there has been much to do about “this is not Sarah Palin Inflatable Love Doll”!  I am thrilled by the publicity.  It amazes me the difference in opinions about this item.  There are hysterical comments on the blog at Frisky Sarah Palin Sex Doll Now On Sale or on Salonwhich by the tone of the article is NOT in favor of our parody Sarah Palin Inflatable Love Doll.  I love the headline “Inflatable Politicians” at Trendhunter and “VPILF in the News” at Squidooand “Impalin’ Palin” at AVN.  To be fair I am amused by the negativity surrounding this is not Sarah Palin Inflatable Love Doll.  The comments haven’t stopped about sexism and if Topco Sales should be sued over at Shakesville on the Sarah Palin Sexism Watch.

Designing sex toys changing lives?

I was recently interviewed for an article in XBiz.  I was emailed several questions regarding my position at Topco Sales, the Executive Director of Product Development.  It really has me thinking.  What exactly do I do?  To the person outside of the sex toy industry I assume designing sex toys is an interesting, exciting, glamorous, perverted, maybe even disgusting position.  I have been told by many people that I have the greatest job in the world and I have also been asked by others in a negative context, “How can you do that”? 

Well, I do love my job.  I don’t think it is for the reasons that anyone expects.  It is for my own personal reasons; because it is challenging, unpredictable, empowering, frustrating, exciting, rewarding, taboo and educational to name a few.  For me it is hard to imagine doing anything else.  If I am being honest, I have imagined working in other industries.  However, when I really think about it what else can I do that gives me such a sense of purpose.  By purpose, I mean that I feel that whatever decision I make everyday can severly impact the most intimate moments of a human being’s life.  Yes I do have the power to negatively or positively influence a person’s self esteem, pleasure, relationship, etc. 

In my many years of doing home parties I have spoke with thousands of women that shared the most intimate details of their lifes with me.  I have had women who have never experienced orgasms, women who have been cheated on and of course women that cheated.  There have been women who are addicted to sex, women who are disgusted by sex, women who have been abused, sexually, physically and pschologically.  I have spoken with women of all ages, races and economic status.  

When I was on the frontline (consumer sales) I had the opportunity to convince a customer to try a variety of sex toys ranging from inexpensive hard plastic vibrators to $100 rabbit style vibes.  I sold anal beads to women who had NEVER contemplated anal sex.  I sold Ben Wa balls to women who had weak kegal muscles.  I sold masturbators or strokersshaped like mouths to women for their husbands because it disgusted them to perform oral sex.  Prolong or stamina creams and lotions were popular for the women who felt their partners “got off” to early.  Strap ons with penis shaped dongs to both straight and gay women that wanted to penetrate their partners either vaginally or anally.  After every interaction I learned something.  Whether it was about a woman, man, couple, gay, straight, bisexual or even virgins I felt grateful to have been given the opportunity.  Hearing so many stories, peeking into so many people’s bedrooms gave me the priceless education and experience to develop new and innovative adult products on a mass market. 

So what do I do?  I create and bring to market adult products and sex toys that enable a person to be whatever they want to be.  To try new things or make the same old thing better or at least different.  To enhance their realtionships, to explore their bodies, to please their lover.  I have the power to develop a new size of bead for anal, a new material that enhances pleasure, a doll that fulfills the customer’s fantasy, a massager that sparks the beginning of sex toy use, a game that makes a girl’s night out more memorable, a pheromone cologne that may be the special touch that brings lovers together, a swing that assist an injured person’s intimacy. 

What do I do?  I change lives!

Where do I get the idea for the next sex toy?

I am always asked, “Where did you get that idea” or “How do you come up with another sex toy?”  Well…EVERYWHERE!  It is the curse of development.  I go to the grocery store and I look at packaging.  I pick up bottles, unique design.  I look at shrink sleeves, nice combination of colors.  I notice brands, logos, tag lines and of course the copy.  For me the copy is the soul of the product though I do have to admit that not everyone reads the copy.  Right? 

I drive in my car on the freeway and stare at the scenery every peak and valley seems in someway to be sensual, phallic shapes appear in clouds, beautiful flowers become a bed of nipples etc.  You think I am kidding, I am not! 

I am probably the only parent that encourages my children to take the normally dreaded trip to the toystore.  I love the toy store.  The colors, the packaging, the marketing and especially the functionality and designs of children’s toys.  Our Burning Angel Toys packaging was inspired by a product line in the Disney Store.  The packaging has a section that houses a clear acetate label and the area is raised from the rest of the clamshell.  Topco Sales award winning Eden line packaging  design is inspired by a very popular brand of dolls. 

In addition to toy stores I love the cosmetics counter at a department store.  I can look at the top end labels and what market research and a team of top notch designers have come out with for free!  Cosmetics and perfumes are a huge inspiration.  Our top selling 5X Space Explorer controller was designed years ago to look very similar to a Gucci bottle that was popular at the time.
